Government has announced the commencement of the third phase of its food aid distribution program, targeting over 6.2 million food-insecure households affected by poor harvests during the 2023-2024 agricultural season.
The programme aims to provide essential support to vulnerable populations struggling to meet their food and non-food needs.
In an interview, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri, said approximately 140,000 tonnes of grain have already been distributed to vulnerable groups nationwide.
The food distribution program, alongside the Urban Cash Transfer program, is part of the government’s broader efforts to address food insecurity and support vulnerable populations, particularly in regions heavily affected by El NiƱo-induced drought.
