Convicted rapists are set to face a minimum mandatory 15-year sentence if the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Amendment Bill, 2021 that was gazetted today is passed into law.

Apart from providing minimum mandatory sentence, the bill also criminalises acts by persons who seek foreign interventions to resolve their concerns against anyone including the State.

The provision of a mandatory sentence for rape follows intense lobbying to government by various women’s groups, Legislators and other gender activists to have such sentences as a deterrent measure.

The Act will also be amended to criminalise actions of people who seek to undermine the country’s sovereignty through seeking foreign interventions in its domestic affairs.
