Vice president Dr Constantino Chiwenga who is also Health and Child Care Minister says scientists have identified the presence of the Omicron Covid-19 variant in Zimbabwe, calling on the nation to remain vigilant in the fight against the pandemic.

Addressing a federation of young farmer’s awards ceremony in Harare on Thursday, Vice President Chiwenga urged Zimbabweans to get vaccinated and follow world health protocols.

Meanwhile the African Union's health watchdog has appealed for calm over omicron, the new, heavily mutated covid-19 variant, which has prompted many governments to impose new restrictions.

Addressing media, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr John Nkengasong, said there is no need to panic.

He added that the Africa CDC had been preparing "for the longest time" for the possibility of a new variant and is well placed to contain a surge in cases.
