Finance and Economic Development minister Professor Mthulli Ncube is tomorrow expected to present the 2022 National Budget.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage said it is pinning hope on the budget to grant its request for over $1 billion to purchase consumables and meet related expenses to clear the backlog in national identity cards, passports, birth and death certificates.
This was revealed by the ministry's Permanent Secretary Aaron Nhepera while giving oral evidence before a Parliamentary portfolio committee on Home Affairs on Tuesday.
The passport backlog which stood at about 260 000 in January this year now stands at around 180 000 after the Civil Registry took advantage of the Covid-19 restriction to human movement to clear part of the outstanding documents.
