Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima says schools should desist from chasing away students who are on the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) program.

Responding during the question and answer session in the National Assembly yesterday Professor Mavima said government had paid up its BEAM obligations to the end of the third term last year and is now in the process of disbursing funds for the current new term.

Meanwhile National Assembly Speaker Advocate Jacob Mudenda, weighing in on the issue said government must enforce the Justice Maphios Cheda ruling which states that it is illegal to chase away students who have not paid their school fees.

Approximately 1 million 800 thousand students are on the beam program.
