President mourns mbira icon Mbuya Chiweshe

Government has granted the late music icon and mbira player, Mbuya Stella Rambisai Nekati Chiweshe a state-assisted funeral in recognition of her achievements as an internationally acclaimed artist.

In a statement Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda said President Emmerson Mnagagwa who is on leave and the Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga have sent their messages of condolence to the Chiweshe and Reich families following the demise of the mbira guru who succumbed to cancer of the brain yesterday at the age of 76.

Dr Sibanda said the late music icon epitomised Zimbabwe’s cultural excellence through the Mbira Dzavadzimu genre which she successfully took to the international stage.
