President Mnangagwa mourns Pope Francis

  Online Desk President Emmerson Mnangagwa has joined other world leaders in mourning Roman Catholic leader, Pope Francis, who died at the Vatican City in Rome, Italy, yesterday. In a statement, President Mnangagwa described the late pontiff as a man of profound humility who stood for peace, compassion and justice. The president extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and Catholics around the world. African leaders praised the legacy of compassion and inclusivity of Pope Francis. Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, hailed “the Pope’s courageous engagement with the African continent,” which he said amplified voices of the voiceless, adding that the pontiff was a champion of peace and reconciliation, who stood in solidarity with those affected by conflict. In his tribute, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Francis had an “extraordinary life story” and “care for marginalised individuals and groups.” Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi said the pontiff was a “great servant of God, whose life was a vibrant testimony of faith, humility, and unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity.” Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera, who met the Pope last year, hailed him for his passion for environmental issues. Pope Francis died at the age of 88 yesterday following months of ill health including a battle with pneumonia. Born Jorge Bergoglio in Argentina in 1936, Pope Francis had been leader of the Catholic Church since March 2013, to the world’s almost 1.4 billion Catholics.

Condolence book opened for Pope Francis in Harare

  Online Desk A condolence book in honour of Pope Francis will be opened today at the Apostolic Nunciature in Mount Pleasant, Harare, giving the local faithful a chance to say their final goodbyes to the beloved pontiff. In a statement, the Vatican’s diplomatic mission, Apostolic Nuncio Janusz Urbanczyk said from today to Thursday, Zimbabwe’s Catholic bishops, clergy, and religious superiors are invited to sign the book between 10am-1pm and 3pm to 5pm at 5 St. Kilda Road, Mount Pleasant, in Harare.

Foreign exhibitors eye deals at Zimbabwe International Trade Fair

PSC warns against work boycotts, insists on normal operations

  Online Desk The Public Service Commission (PSC) says it has noted with concern recent incitements circulating on various platforms, encouraging public servants and other citizens to stay away from work or abstain from regular activities from today till tomorrow. In a statement, the commission said the core mandate of public servants is to serve the people of Zimbabwe faithfully, diligently, and without interruption. The commission added that it will not tolerate any conduct that threatens the stability and functionality of public institutions emphasizing that today and tomorrow are normal working days. The statement further added that accounting officers should ensure that attendance registers are completed for their ministries, departments, and agencies, including devolved structures.

ZRP assures nation of safety

Online Desk The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has assured the public of safety and security ahead of the 22st and 23rd of April 2025, vowing to maintain law and order across the country. In a statement yesterday, police authorities confirmed they have deployed adequate officers nationwide to protect citizens and businesses. The security operation covers Central Business Districts, residential areas, industrial zones, and other public spaces to ensure uninterrupted socio-economic activities. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned that officers will arrest anyone attempting to disrupt traffic flow or restrict public movement. Authorities cautioned against social media abuse, urging citizens to ignore posts designed to spread alarm or incite chaos. With the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair underway, police guaranteed protection for all local and international exhibitors attending the event in Bulawayo. The ZRP emphasized its commitment to executing its constitutional mandate impartially, promising severe consequences for violence instigators. Members of the public were encouraged to report threats, intimidation, or incitement to violence through official police channels.

DIARRHEA OUTBREAK CLAIMS 7 LIVES

  By Lastword Musekiwa Harare, Zimbabwe – A diarrhea outbreak has swept through Zimbabwe, claiming 7 lives and infecting over 6,500 people in just one week. According to a latest disease surveillance report issued by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the majority of cases were reported in Mashonaland West (1,877) and Mashonaland Central (932) provinces. The ministry said nearly half of the reported cases (2,867) involved children under the age of 5. The deaths were reported from Sally Mugabe Hospital (6) and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital (1) in Harare Metropolitan Province. The cumulative total for diarrhea cases now stands at 12,483, with 12 reported deaths. Health authorities are urging citizens to take precautions to prevent the spread of the disease.

Zimbabwe Bids Farewell to National Hero Jaison Chirinda

In an interview with Zimpapers Radio News on the sidelines of the burial, Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Minister Monica Mavhunga, Zanu PF Politburo member Kenneth Musanhi, and Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Christopher Magomo said the late national hero consistently preached peace. The late national hero, who joined the liberation struggle in 1965 and received training in countries including China and Tanzania, passed away last Sunday due to complications related to diabetes. He was 82 years old.

4,465 GRADUATE AT GREAT ZIMBABWE UNIVERSITY

By Lastword Musekiwa President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Chancellor of Great Zimbabwe University, has today presided over the university’s 18th graduation ceremony, where 4,465 students received their degrees. At least 56% of the graduates were female. The ceremony saw Masvingo Minister of State and Provincial Affairs, Ezra Chadzamira, graduating with a master’s degree. Among the graduates was also musician Jonah Moyo, who received an honorary Doctorate degree in Philosophy in Creative and Performing Arts. Moyo’s music career spans over four decades, beginning in 1975. Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo highlighted the university’s commitment to social responsibility through its Law School’s law clinic, which provides free legal advice to the less privileged. Great Zimbabwe University continues to expand its offerings, with plans to introduce a School of Mining inline with the university’s focus on Heritage-Based Education 5.0, which encourages innovation and entrepreneurship. Some students are already engaged in income-generating projects as part of this initiative.

Early war stalwart Chirinda declared national hero

  By Online Desk The Zanu PF Politburo has conferred national hero status on Jaison William Chezhira Chakaipa Chirinda, who was one of the early cadres to receive military training before waging the liberation struggle. An Extraordinary Zanu PF Politburo meeting chaired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is also the ruling party’s First Secretary, was convened in Harare yesterday to deliberate on the hero status of Chirinda. Chirinda(82) died on October 27, 2024 owing to diabetic-related complications and Zanu PF Mashonaland Central Province submitted a request that he be conferred with the highest honour owing to his illustrious exploits during the liberation struggle. He was one of the decorated military cadres who were involved in the first military operation against the Rhodesian forces in the Sinoia area, now Chinhoyi, where he led one of the two groups deployed for an offensive against the Rhodesians. He was later arrested and served time in prison together with President Mnangagwa, who was serving a life term for his role in fighting the Ian Smith regime. During yesterday’s Extraordinary Politburo meeting, President Mnangagwa said the indaba was convened to consider Chirinda’s hero status. He directed Zanu PF Acting Secretary-General, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, to read out a letter from the party’s Mashonaland Central Province recommending the conferment of national hero status on Chirinda. Briefing journalists after the Politburo meeting, Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity Christopher Mutsvangwa, said there was unanimity among Politburo members on the need to confer the highest honour on Chirinda. He said Zanu PF national chairman, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, was tasked with conveying the message to the family of Chirinda in Madziva, Mashonaland Central Province, last night. The burial date has been set for Monday next week.
