Zim Covid-19 ventilator set for clinical trials on humans

By George Msumba

Zimbabwe’s first locally made COVID-19 ventilator has gone through clinical trials with animals. The machine now awaits the importation of relevant electronic components that will allow the machine to interface with equipment in the hospitals.

Harare Institute of Technology (HIT)  Lead Researcher on the Ventilator Project Edmund Maputi on Thursday told journalists that the local prototype has been designed to specifically help Covid-19 patients with breathing difficulties.

Also giving an update on the Ventilator Project, HIT  Technology Transfer Director Dr. Talon Garikai said that they were still awaiting a greenlight from the health ministry to start clinical trials on humans in Zimbabwe but in the meantime, they will ship the ventilator to other institutes in the region to test the machine.

Dr. Garikai added that once all materials and electronic components are available the team will be able to produce 20 ventilators a day.
