Defence and War Veterans Minister Oppah  Muchinguri-Kashiri says the net is closing on people who are using social media to spread falsehoods as she dismissed rumours of an impending coup.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence, Home Affairs, and Security Services on Monday, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri said the security forces had now identified the source of the social media rumour which alleged that a coup was imminent but, however, could not give more details citing security reasons.

‘’We do not go by the social media and I would not want to tell you what we are doing on that one I will reserve it on security reasons, on what is happening on social media but we are dealing with it.”

Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri added that the country is in the process of crafting a law that will deal with false peddlers.

‘We already have a Bill to that effect on how we deal with people who peddle lies, particularly on security situations. Those are the people who are bent at bringing the country into disrepute. The net is closing on them, these are issues you should not take likely and we already know them’

Speaking on the neighbouring country, Mozambique the Defence Minister said Zimbabwe had not deployed soldiers in that country which has been under siege from an insurgent group.

She added that any deployment into the region would be under the directive of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
