Covid-19 declared a national disaster

President Emmerson Mnangagwa- has declared the Coronavirus (Covid 19) pandemic a national disaster.

In a State of the Nation Address at State House in Harare on Tuesday, on additional measures taken by the government to ensure the national response is effective, comprehensive and complete, the President announced the cancellation of national events such as the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) and Independence celebrations. He added that public gatherings of more than 100 people have been suspended for the next 60 days.

The President said schools are to remain open until the scheduled closing day on the 27th of this March but with strengthened monitoring mechanisms.

President Mnangagwa also discouraged travellers from high-risk countries to postpone their travel arrangements to Zimbabwe for the next 30 days, starting from 20th March 2020.

He, however, emphasised that the country’s ports of entry are to remain open until such a time that be drastic measures be implemented.

“Equally, Zimbabweans are discouraged from travelling to, through & from high-risk countries during the same period”
