Bulawayo runs out of day old chicks
BULAWAYO province has run out of day-old chicks, with poultry farmers fearing a shortage of chickens during the festive season, when demand is high.
In an interview with Zimpapers Radio News in the city on Monday, Zimbabwe Poultry Association Chairperson, Solomon Zawe said the national Covid-19 lock down, has slowed down the production of day old chicks.
“Our only partner South Africa is still affected by the avian influenza so we need to go outside the region whereby there is 40% duty on all imported staff. So as an industry, for the betterment of the farmers, we have approached the ministry for a waiver of the 40% duty as we recover from the Covid 19 pandemic and also looking at Christmas demand.
In 2017, the country faced day old chicks shortages due to the outbreak of the avian influenza virus which affected some of the country’s largest poultry producers.
