The Zimbabwe Republic Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is carrying out a firearms verification exercise and has urged members of the public who are in possession of firearms lawfully or illegally to surrender them to police stations countrywide.
In a statement, CID acting spokesperson Detective Assistant Inspector Portia Chinho said, the exercise is necessary as some licenced holders are no longer in the same position as they were when they applied for the firearms.
Detective Assistant Inspector Chinho said some companies have shut down but are still in possession of firearms.
She urged those with firearms of deceased relatives that were not surrendered or re-registered and legal holders of firearms who have not renewed their firearm certificates to also surrender the weapons.
She said members of the public can contact the department or any nearest police station for more information.
