The Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe (UCAZ) has appealed to the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration Authority (ZINARA) to allocate more funds to urban local authorities in comparison to their rural counterparts, arguing that there is more road maintenance to be done in urban areas than in rural set-ups.

The call was made by the association’s deputy president, Councilor Tsungai Makore, when UCAZ appeared in Parliament before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Local Government, Public Works and National Housing today.

ZINARA is set to disburse 44 million dollars to urban authorities for road maintenance this year, whereas rural district councils were allocated 32.5 million dollars.

Meanwhile, Councilor Makore reiterated calls by urban councils to be given back the vehicle licensing function from ZINARA so that they can administer road maintenance more effectively.
