Farmers in Gokwe - Nembudziya have started picking their cotton amid high hopes for a reviewed cotton price.
Gokwe - Chireya Ward 9 Councillor Grace Marongwe said optimism is high in the cotton growing hotspot as farmers anticipate new prices from the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (COTTCO), which availed inputs to over 155 000 farmers across the country under the Presidential Free Inputs scheme.
Councillor Marongwe said some farmers have already started delivering bales at COTTCO base at Nembudziya where they are being given an advance payment of $50 as they seek to cushion their immediate financial needs.
Cllr Marongwe said majority of cotton farmers were contracted by COTTCO while a few are under China-Africa adding that side buyers do not have a chance this season.
Transportation charges were in the past hindering farmers from selling to approved companies as side buyers would come and buy from their doorsteps though at a lower price.
Meanwhile government has promised a lucrative cotton farming season ever with a minimal price of not less that 50 cents per kilogram of grade a cotton.
